How often should workplace appliances be tested and tagged in Victoria? Frequencies, AS/NZS 3760 explained, and how to stay compliant.
Every business has a duty to keep its workplace safe. Portable electrical equipment such as kettles, laptop chargers, power boards and power tools is a common source of shocks and fires. Test and tag is the standard way to manage that risk.
What is test and tag?
It’s a visual inspection and electrical test of plug-in equipment, carried out to AS/NZS 3760:2022, the Australian/New Zealand standard for in-service testing of electrical equipment and RCDs. Each item gets a tag showing the test date and the next due date.
Is test and tag mandatory in Victoria?
Victorian workplace law requires employers to provide safe plant and equipment. WorkSafe Victoria treats testing and tagging of plug-in equipment as part of that general duty under section 21(2)(a) of the OHS Act (VTHC OHS Reps summary). Test and tag to AS/NZS 3760 is the accepted way to show you’ve done that. Construction sites, hire equipment and some industries have specific requirements.
How often should equipment be tested?
It depends on the environment. Harsh environments like construction, factories and commercial kitchens need more frequent testing than offices. AS/NZS 3760 sets the intervals; your tester will apply the right one to each area.
What else should be tested?
Safety switches (RCDs) should be push-button tested regularly and time-tested by an electrician; Energy Safe Victoria urges Victorians to test them at least once a year. Emergency and exit lighting also needs periodic testing and logging.
What happens if an item fails?
It’s tagged out of service and removed. Your tester will tell you whether it can be repaired or must be replaced.
